Toronto Store Replacing R. G. Mitchell Now Open

We know that lots of people are eagerly searching for information about what book retailer is going to fill the void in the GTA left by the bankruptcy of R. G. Mitchell in late 2008 — because this blog has received more than 1,500 visitors on that topic alone!

I didn’t receive this notification in time to notify all the readers who might have been wondering if the store would be open on its originally-scheduled opening day.  The new 12,000 foot store, Faith Family Books and Gifts, did open its doors today, Saturday April 4 — but it’s still under construction. In the coming days, the store will be open for business while everything gets finished, and they say they’ve got a pre-opening sale on.

The official grand opening will happen on Saturday May 2 at noon; see all the details below.

In another positive development, the home page of the store’s Web site is now operating. Bookmark http://www.faithfamilybooks.ca/ and watch to see when the full Web site is launched.

And if you’re a Facebook follower, Faith Family Books and Gifts has its own fan page, complete with photos of the soft launch on April 4 and updates about the store’s progress.

Here’s the message from one of the store’s owners, Larry Willard:

Just a reminder to all our friends and customers who have been calling and sending e-mails about the date and time of the Grand Opening Celebration of the new Toronto store Faith Family Books & Gifts: you may have read in the Christian papers last month that the date was changed to Saturday, May 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The store is still under construction, but to all those who arrive April 4 expecting a celebration, we have decided to hold an April 4 “Pre-Opening Under Construction Sale” with lots of specials and great deals. There aren’t hard hats or skids of books everywhere, but we still have some areas being finished. There will be food and music and lots of specials. But it isn’t the Grand Opening Celebration!!!

The Grand Opening Celebration on May 2 will include a great celebration with lots of food, music and book signings by dozens of top Canadian authors, along with musicians, singers, media and many Christian leaders in attendance. The day will be highlighted by a prayer of dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony at noon.

In addition to one of the largest selections of Christian books and gifts in Ontario, our new 12,000 square foot store will include a relaxing cafe, expanded music and DVD area, the largest selection of greeting cards in the city, rotating art displays by top Canadian Christian painters, a wide variety of church resources and a “Great Deals” area with thousands of top name titles for a toonie.

Again, the new store is located in the Town Centre Plaza, 45 Milner Avenue, Scarborough, one light north of the 401, at the corner of McCowan Road and Milner Avenue, immediately next to Winners. There is ample parking, and the easy access off the 401 makes getting there fast and simple.

  • Thanks for your note, Frances. We’re commenting about the new Faith Family Books and Gifts store on this blog, but we’re not affiliated with the store. If you want to find out details about location and hours, go to the store’s own Web site at http://www.faithfamilybooks.ca/, or phone them at 416-291-9005. The location is 45 Milner Avenue, just north of the 401 off McCowan Road; turn at the first stoplight. It’s easy enough to find, but if you want a map, ask them to add one to their web site.
